10 Facts about Boudicca for kids


 Boudicca was a brave British Queen who stood up and fought against the Romans- soon after they had invaded Britain. These days, there is a statue dedicated to her in London. 

Here are 10 facts about Boudicca 

1. She was the Queen of the Iceni Tribe 

The Iceni tribe lived in an area which is now East Anglia in the South East of England. 

2. She was very brave 

She battled against the Romans in 60-61 AD. Can you imagine the strength and courage this must have taken!

3. She destroyed the capital of England! 

Her forces destroyed the capital of Roman Britain which was then Colchester- not London. 

4. She was blood thirsty!

In the wars against the Romans, it is thought that 80,000 soldiers were killed. The Romans were scared of her really!

5. She had a gruesome death!

Rather than surrendering to the Romans, Boudicca poisoned herself instead of being captured. 

6. She also destroyed London!

During her battle against the Romans, Boudicca also burnt Londinium (London) to the ground, as well as Verulamium (St Alban’s) in the process. 

7. Her name means victory!

Her name comes from the word ‘Bouda’ which means victory. 

8. She had red hair

We don’t have any pictures of Boudicca so we don’t know what she looked like. A Roman writer from the time, Tacitus, said she had long red hair. 

9. Her soldiers were fascinated by blue!

 Boudicca’s soldiers painted themselves blue to make themselves more scary looking! 

10. Her husband was friends with the Romans!

 He was called Prasutagus and was friends with the Romans.
