What was the SACK OF ROME?

The Roman Empire was known to be one of the most powerful empires that ever existed. However, they left Britain to rack and ruin and eventually collapsed in 476AD. But what was the Sack of Rome?

It was led by Barbarians

The Sack of Rome was led by the Eastern European tribe known as the Visigoths. They are also known as 'barbarians'.

King Alaric

The Visigoths were led by King Alaric- who led them into Rome.

When was the Sack of Rome?

The Sack of Rome was carried out by the Visigoths on 25th-27th August 410AD. It lasted for three days.

What was it?

The Sack of Rome was when the Visigoths, led by King Alaric, invaded the city of Rome and looted it for its treasures, paintings, jewels and precious items. They murdered thousands of Romans and enslaved thousands more.

By this point, Rome was no longer the capital of the Roman Empire- it had been moved to Ravenna which was 217 miles north of Rome. The city of Rome was very weak at this point, and the Sack of Rome marked the start of the end for the Roman Empire- it eventually collapsed in 476AD.
