Julius Caesar was perhaps one of the most famous Emperors of the Roman Empire. However, he was only the Roman leader for five years before he was assassinated (killed for his political views) by his rivals.
Here are 11 facts about Julius Caesar…
1. Julius Caesar created the Julian Calendar- which is very similar to the one we use today.
2. He was born in 100BC in Rome and was killed in March 44BC. He was 55 when he was killed.
3. In his younger days, Caesar was captured and imprisoned by pirates. Years later, after his release, he captured those very pirates and had them put to death- initially by slitting their throats because he felt lenient!
4. He was known to owe a lot of money throughout his life.
5. Julius Caesar had a relationship with Cleopatra from Egypt. However, despite the fact he was already married, the people of Rome did not see this as a bad thing. I’m not sure Caesar would be allowed to do that these days!
6. When Julius Caesar was assassinated, he was stabbed 23 times by his rivals. After his death, a wax statue was commissioned in the Senate.
7. Julius Caesar was also a noted author. He wrote books detailing his leadership of The Gallic Wars (wars in modern day France) and his wars in Egypt.
8. It has been thought, but may not be true, that Julius Caesar suffered from epilepsy or even malaria.
9. 15th March, the date of Caesar’s death, is also known as the Ides of March.
10. His successor was his nephew Octavian. Octavian became the first emperor to change his name to Caesar Augustus.
11. One of Julius Caesar’s early rivals, Pompey, eventually was beheaded and his head was presented to Caesar by the Egyptian Pharoah Ptolemy.
12. Julius Caesar was the first Roman Emperor to attack Britain. He tried this feat in 56-55BC but failed miserably and did not manage to take over over country!
